Captain America Crochet Hat Pattern

Hello Hookers!

Today I’m going to share my Captain America themed earflap beanie. This pattern is written in child size up to 5 years, but you can easily adjust the pattern by changing hook size or increasing/decreasing stitches in the beginning increasing rounds.

Let’s get started!

Materials:
H Hook
G Hook
Worsted weight yarn [I should add, yarns like Caron Simply Soft -what I used for this pattern, will give a more tight fit. For a more relaxed fit try a yarn like Hobby Lobby I love this Yarn]
Yarn Needle
Scissors

Beanie Pattern:
Beginning ch 3’s count as first dc in each round. You will sl st the end of each round to the top chain of the 3 beginning chains[the first dc].
Round 1: crochet 10 sc into a magic circle, sl st to first sc [10sc]
Round 2: Ch 3, Dc into same stitch, *2 dc in next stitch* continue * to * until end of round, sl st to first dc [20dc]
Round 3: Ch 3, DC into same stitch, dc in next stitch. *2 Dc into next stitch, 1 dc in the next stitch* continue * to * until the end of the round, sl st to first dc[30dc]
Round 4: Ch3, Dc into same stitch, 1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches. *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches* Continue * to * until end of the round, sl st to first dc [40 dc]
Round 5: Ch 3, Dc into same stitch, 1 dc in each of the next 3 stitches. *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in each of the next 3 stitches* Continue * to * until end of the round, sl st to first dc [50dc]
Round 6: Ch 3, Dc into same stitch, 1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches. *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches* Continue * to * until end of the round, sl st to first dc [60 dc]
Rounds 7-18: Ch 3, dc in each stitch in the round [60 dc]
Finish off

Earflaps
Row 1: Starting at the back seam of the hat, count 9 stitches to the left. sl st the yarn on and ch 3. Dc in each of the next 12 stitches.
Row 2: Turn work, Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each of the next 8 stitches, dc2tog.
Row 3: Turn work. Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each of the next 6 stitches, dc2tog.
Row 4: Turn work. Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each of the next 4 stitches, dc2tog.
Row 5: Turn work. Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each of the next 2 stitches, dc2tog.
Finish off

Now for the other earflap.
Row 1: starting at the back seam, count 21 stitches to the right. Sl st the yarn on and ch3. Dc in each of the next 12 stitches.
Row 2: Turn work, Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each of the next 8 stitches, dc2tog.
Row 3: Turn work, Ch 3, dcstog, dc in each of the next 6 stitches, dc2tog.
Row 4: Turn work, Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each of the next 4 stitches, dc2tog.
Row 5: Turn work, Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each of the next 2 stitches, dc2tog.

Now we’re going to add a pretty trim to give it a clean look! Sl St your trim color into the back seam of the hat and single crochet all the way around. Don’t fret over having perfectly evened stitched in the ear flaps, as long as you try your best to even space the single crochets it’ll have a clean look.

Captain America Symbol
We will start with the back circle, then we will make the star to sew on top.

Circle
Ch 3’s count as first dc in the round
Start with blue
Round 1: Crochet 10 dc into a magic circle, sl st to first dc
Round 2: Ch 3, DC into same stitch, Crochet 2 dc into each of the following stitches. sl st to first dc [20 dc]
Round 3: Ch 3, Dc into same stitch, 1 dc in next stitch, *Crochet 2 dc into next stitch, 1 dc into the next stitch* Continue * to * until end of round. sl st to first dc[30 dc]
At the end of round 3, you will do a color change to red. I prefer THIS method for color changes. You will do this color change in the sl st at the end of round 3.
Round 4: With red now attached, we will ch 3, dc into same stitch, 1 dc into each of the next 2 stitches, *2 dc into next stitch, 1 dc into each of the next 2 stitches* Continue * to * until end of round. sl st to first dc [40 dc]
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around [40 sc]
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing work to the hat.

Star
Use G hook
15 DC into magic circle, sl st to first dc.
Ch 5, sl st in 2nd chain from the hook, sc in next stitch, hdc in next stitch, dc in next stitch. sl st in 3rdstitch from the stitch you just worked in. Repeat this 4 more times. This will give you 5 star peaks. Sl st to first chain in the first chain 5 and finish off. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Wings [make 2]
Ch 3 does NOT count as first dc in each row.
Ch 13
Row 1: Dc in 3rd chain the the hook and across [10 dc]
Row 3:Turn work, ch 3, Dc in 8 of the stitches [leaving 2 stitches unworked] [8dc]
Row 3: Turn work, sl st in first 3 stitches, ch 3, dc in remaining 6 stitches [6dc]
Row 4: Turn work, Ch 3, Dc in first 4 stitches. [4dc]
Row 5: Turn work, sl st in first 3 stitches, ch 3, dc in last 2 stitches [2dc]
Finish off, leave long tail for sewing.

To assemble, sew the star to the circle, then sew the circle to the front of the hat [I sew mine so the bottom of the circle is sitting on top of the last 2 rows of the beanie.] Sew the wings to either side of the beanie, just above the earflaps and centered.

EarFlap Tassles:
Make 8 strands of each color by holding yarn with your index finger and thumb then wrapping the yarn from fingers around elbow and back up 8 times. Snip where you were holding the yarn. This will create 8 strands twice the length of your forearm.
For each tassle you will take 4 strands of each color separated into color groups then slip stitch them as one big group onto the bottom of the ear flap. Braid the groups until desired length, tie and knot and cut off ends to create a clean tassle.
